Meb Keflezighi (Kef-lez-ghee) is all about hope and second chances-starting with his very survival. The child of a small African country ravaged by a brutal war, Meb arrived in America with nothing but the clothes on his back, speaking no English and never having raced a mile. So how did he end up an A student, one of the most celebrated and respected athletes of his generation, and winner of the 2009 New York City Marathon?
His story sounds like the living embodiment of the American dream... but Meb's path to victory hasn't been smooth. Not long after he stood on the Olympic platform as a U.S. silver medalist, it all came crashing down. And he was about to find out whether his faith in God, the values his parents had taught him, and his belief that he was born to run were enough to see him through.
Run to Overcome tells the inspirational story of a man who discovered the real meaning of victory, and shares the secrets to overcoming the odds in your own life.

I purchased Meb's biography after watching him win The Boston Marathon at the finish line In Boston. What a special day that was on so many levels. I had been a fan of Meb over the years and I decided to purchase the audio version to listen to in my car. The story is well written and Mr. Patrick's narration is first rate. I enjoyed this story very much and I will be listening to it again soon. I must say that I enjoyed the story even more than I expected I would. It was interesting to hear Meb's family story and I found the details regarding his training to be very informative. This story does not include Meb's Boston victory as it predates this event. I highly recommend this audio version of Meb's biography! Well done!Product details

Run to Overcome The Inspiring Story of an American Champion LongDistance Quest to Achieve a Big Dream (Audible Audio Edition) Meb Keflezighi Dick Patrick Jon Gauger Oasis Audio Books Reviews
WOW! Can't say enough about this book. It was a quick read and an inspiration. I love feeling involved in the story and I really felt like I understood his pain and his success in his life. There are only a couple of (kinda) slow parts when he gets into the technical stuff about racing but if you love the technical stuff then you'll be fine. These moments did not distract from the book and I think are expected when you are reading about a runner's life.
I was inspired. I was moved. I only knew his name before this but now I am a Meb FAN! )
Ever since I saw Meb conquer the 2009 NY marathon with the USA singlet on, I have been a huge fan! Hearing his story is inspiring, reading it firsthand in 'Run to Overcome' is a heartfelt look into Meb's life journey. Meb writes about his family's roots in Eritrea and how much his parents sacrificed to get him and his siblings to a safer environment. After years of separation and preparation, his father was able to get the family to Italy and ultimately the U.S. Meb's story is the essence of the American dream- immigrant comes to the land of opportunity, works hard, and can achieve anything he wants in life. The fact that he is now an Olympic silver medalist and one of the fastest endurance runners in the country is astonishing and wonderful. The other piece of this book that is wonderful to read is how close Meb is to his parents, siblings, wife, children, friends, and his coaches. He appears to be a genuinely caring person who is thankful to have a strong network of friends and family in his life and never takes them for granted. I loved this book and I hope to see Meb conquer many more races and goals in his lifetime. I would highly recommend this book to Meb fans, runners, and also to anyone looking for an inspiring read. It will make you want to do more with your life and be your best self.
The big picture of Meb. He intertwines his running more and more through the book but the thread that runs through the books are challenges not related to running. This is not a typical "believe and achieve." His belief in a higher power is forefront from the beginning. The spiritual side of Meb is humbling yet you see the value each journey he takes. You really get a sense of lows and highs of life. As a runner you feel his disappointment due to a bad split-second decision late in a race. Or the despair of an injury. The perspective he gives of the running community is among the best - how they compete against one another often but are more than willing to give due when they place less than first. His motto of "run to win" is hinted at throughout the book with it really coming to light in the end. This book takes you on a journey that you most likely don't expect - how good life really can be.
Meb Keflezighi is known to many for the silver medal in 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and for his magnificent wins in New York and Boston Marathons. Yet few of us were aware of his exciting personal story of migration from Eritrea, a less known country of Africa located between Sudan and Ethiopia, to Italy and then USA. Born in a family of ten siblings, Meb learned early in his life that nothing is given and you have to fight hard to fulfill your dreams. Eventually, he (as well as his brothers and sisters) overcame the odds, educated himself, exploited his enormous talent in running and prosper. Meb's secret to success is the strict adherence to his belief system which was ingrained by his parents and consists of a mix of christian values, hard work ethos and perseverance.
Besides offering an inspirational story, the book has some other interesting points, too. It provides a glance into the life of an elite runner; his training regime, economic remuneration and contracts offered, nutrition, reconciliation of professional requirements and family life, psychological downturns and other issues which can be interesting for fans or athletes of distance running.
Overall, i enjoyed the book and i recommend it. The language is good, the structure proper and the narrative easy going. If i were to be critical, i would highlight author's tendency to be overly idealistic. The notion, which transcends the whole book and suggests that if you try hard enough and be a good guy, the universe will conspire to help you achieve your dreams is somewhat naive - according to my opinion. That said, the book is indeed inspiring even for a - somewhat- cynic guy like me!
Whether it is running, or working, or supporting others, I loved the inspirational themes- to have a passion, to set realistic and attainable goals, to be smart about preparation, and give it your very best. God will be by your side.
Winning isn’t always about crossing the finish line first, it’s about achieving the goals you set out for yourself, and being gracious, respectful, and thankful for all those who helped you get there.
I recommend this book for anyone, no matter what your race is. It is motivational, and lets you run along one of America’s elite runners, step by step, as he is running some of the toughest races of his career.
He demonstrates beautifully his points of “run to overcome,” and setting attainable goals, and putting in the effort, thought, planning, training and step-by-step mini goals to attain the big goal. His success strategy works no matter what you’re trying to achieve.
